I want to update the bathroom because it is very old and ugly right now. I would like to put in a new tub, vanity, tile flooring, and paint the bathroom. Also, there are tiles on the wall in the shower.
I only have one bathroom in the house so I can't have the bathroom closed off for more than a day at a time. What should I work on first, second, etc..? It seems the floor makes sense to do first but then what? Please suggest. (also, if you've had it done by someone else, how much did it cost you?) thanks!

Maybe the tub should be the first thing done...so I won't mess up the flooring...iono...just put in a new toilet a few days ago so that don't need to be done...
Keep those answers and suggestions coming though!

If you must replace the tub as opposed to going to a shower stall only,,, then that should be the first step. DO NOT replace the floor first.

Do every bit of removal first, that you can, in stages obviously, since you have to use the bathroom. Some of the removal may only cause a mess, not a disruption in services.

I seem to get more bathroom remodeling work than I really want, but It's what I do.

When you have every non essential torn out, then replace the tub, or certainly HAVE IT replaced.

Once the tub is in, and the walls have been properly addressed, then move on to the vanity, sink, toilet, etc.

I personally tile the entire floor, then install everything else,,,IE: Toilet/vanity, on top of the tile.

Paint after everything is installed and functioning. That will be the easy task of all.

If I was doing this for you, and didn't have to greatly alter any plumbing or electrical issues, I'd charge anywhere from $25 to $40 per hour, plus materials, with prep and cleanup included.

I have redone bathrooms at least amillion times. I am a plumber, and have done my own as well...Toilet first. God knows you can always shower at a friends house. if you are remodeling completely, gutting it etc, it's gonna take you more than a day.depends how bad the floor is. you might have water damage and have to replace the subfloor...not enough information for that. But still the toilet first. then it doesn't matter, but I would put in the tub, then the sink. If you are laying tile on the floor, you might have to raise the toilet flange, because tile is at least 1/4 inch thick...you can do that yourself too, plumbing isn't hard. I'm a girl, plumbed for seven years. If you hire a plumber, and there's lots to do, that would cost you plenty. Just remember everything you buy comes with instructions, and if you have half a brain and can read, you are ahead of the game..Good Luck.

It is tough when there's only one bathroom in the house. Here goes:

The floor is LAST. All wall and cieling work is messy and will fall on the floor.

Remove everthing you possibly can, except the plumbing fixtures. I mean everything, right down to bare studs and floor joists. Contact your supplier and see when he can deliver the new fixtures.

Temporarily screw down some plywood over the floor joists so you can walk on it safely.

Have the electricians and plumbers come in to inspect, strategize, and do what they need to do before the walls and cielings go up. There's no point in going through all this only to have an old pipe break next month. If this bathroom has no vent, have the electician add one.

Once the subcontractors have completed their rough work, put your cieling and walls back in, adding insulations and vapor barriers.

Now go for it. With the new fixtures in the next room, have the plumber turn everything off and rip out the old fixtures.

Install the new floor and put the new fixtures in.

Wow, was that expensive!

We just remodeled our bathroom and it is a pain. The floor was one of the last things we did. You don't want to put down a floor then screw it up when you put in a new tub ,wall or paint. In our bathroom we kept the tub and toilet. We replaced everything else. It cost us about 600.

OH BOY!!!
If you have never done a remodeling project before and this is your only bathroom...I would have to caution you. There are ALOT of pitfals that can and do cause major delays if you dont know how to deal with them.

A complete bathroom remodel in the Detroit area is about $10,000. That includes new elct, plumbing, drywall, tub, faucets, sink, toilet, tile.....

Good luck!!! :)

The best part is taking a sledge hammer to the old tub. That is FUN!

Also, the floor is last. You start from the top and work your way down.
