3salesmen split a room at a hotel. The room is 30.00 bucks each man pays 10.00. The clerk later sees that he overcharged them. It is just 25.00 for a room. He takes 5.00 to give back to them. He know he cannot divide 5 three ways so he pockets 2.00 and gives them each a dollar back. Each man has paid 9.00 each for the room, and the clerck has 2.00 in his pocket. 9*3 is 27+the 2 the clerck has = 29 where is the other dollar?

each man has not paid 9 dollars for the room.

Your math is flawed because you haven't taken into account fully the idea of the payment and the change given.

The room costs $25

Each man handed over $10, making a combined payment of $30. Collectively they are entitled to $5 change. But the clerk has wrongly pocketed $2 and gives the men $3 change collectively that they divide.

10x3= 30 payment made
-5= 25 deduction of room price
+3=28 change given
+2=30 change kept by clerk

Look at this another way also and it adds up
Payment made for room= 10x3 = 30
money handed to each man=1 x3= 3
money kept by clerk=2 =3+2= 5 dollars given back after payment
30-5=25
real price of room= 25
balance left= 0

You say $9 X 3 plus $2 = $29.

But that $9 consists of 8.33 paid towards the room and .66 paid to the clerk. For a total of $27. The also get $3 back because they originally paid $30.

Here's where the problem is confusing. The original amount of $30 becomes irrlevant, they get $3 back and pay $27 for a $25 room. To say they pay $9 each and then the clerk is wrong because it adds up to $29 and only $27 is paid.

9*3= 27, 30-27= 3, 27-25= 2, 25+2+1*3=30, 30/3 = 10
If you add the clerk's $2 to that you are adding it twice. 27-25= the clerk's 2 dollars. The remaining 3 dollars, 30-27, is what the businessmen got back.
When you got $29, you added the clerk's $2 twice!

that is old.. um, it's in the clerks hand. this was submitted by a boy to a proffessor of a college one time to show how faulty the math system really is... it works one way but not the other... if you add 5 to 25=30 but when you add 9+9+9=27+2=29.. it is a mistake in wordproblem mathematics..

25 (for a room) =27 (paid) -2 (pocket)

Or 30 - 5 = 27 - 2

Why you sum 27 + 2 when these 2 did not go to a hotel?

You've made it "disappear" though mathematical "slight of hand" and misplaced "logic" ... the "missing dollar" is in the business man's pocket: 30 (original) - 5 (corrected) = 25 the business men paid 8.33 per person with 1 cent tacked on to round it off.

each man has one dollar in his pocket
the clerk has 27 dollars

the men paid $8.3333333333 for the room not 9 each,
this extra third when timesed by three makes up the one missing from your equation

It has to do with how the question is asked - for no matter what the clerk has $27.00 for the room and the men paid 9*3 =$27.00 - the clerk gave them back $3.00.
