With dropshipping, you sell a product at retail and purchase the product wholesale from the supplier. The supplier then ships it to your customer for you.

The advantages are that you don't have to have a warehouse to stock items, and you don't have to deal with shipping problems.

The disadvantages are that you will generally pay more per item (and for shipping) than if you purchase and stock the item yourself, which cuts into your profit margin. This can be a killer if you are selling on the online auctions where you are working with a lowered profit margin to start with.

If you want to work with a dropshipper DO YOUR RESEARCH. There are a lot of disreputable dropshippers in the marketplace. If you are locating dropshippers online, be sure that you check both the BBB and Rip Off Reports to see if that company has complaints.

I have purchased things that were drop shipped - I buy something online from Company A, who does not stock the item, so they send the order to Company B, who then ships it to me. It takes a little longer to receive, but (as a customer) I have had no problems with it. This is often the case with oversized or personalized items - it costs too much to have these items shipped from Company B to Company A and then to me, so Company A has the item shipped directly from their supplier to keep costs down.

The shipping of merchandise from a supplier directly to a retail store's customer, to minimize inventory and administrative costs.

It's very safe and a large number of independent internet retailers do it to reduce inventory costs. You just have to make sure you are ordering from a reliable supplier.
