When you have a trojan you've effectively given up control of your computer. The trojan will open up a port and keep it open so someone with the Client software can connect to your computer and do almost anything they want to. So, yes, what you're describing is possible.
Funnily enough, almost the very same thing happend to myself about 3 years ago, stuff was just being downloaded all the time to my hard drive, eating up my bandwidth (which wasn't much at the time - 56k!).
I would suggest making a backup of all the important things (photo's, documents, uni work etc), formatting your hard drive and re-installing your operating system.
The first thing I would then suggest is downloading the following two programs; Avast Anti-virus and ZoneAlarm - both excellent programs which will keep you safe but importantly, they're free!
With these two up and running, you're pretty much covered for any eventuality with regards to Virii and Trojans.

that process usually takes me 5 hours to do. it's a really irritating trojan.
scan for spyware using many programs not just one. because one won't catch them all!
also use a registry fix program. i forgot the name of the one i used ... REGEDIT? it scans then shows you what is in your registry using full names of programs and what's in them.. and the date too! so that helps, the date makes the difference especially when you know when the invasion happened.
then it will allow you to select and delete manually, which is best.
spysweep is a good idea also.
make note of the names of the programs that are associated with this invasion and the DLL files..
write them down or copy paste if you can and print out. (you may not be able to do that..i just write them down)
control alt delete once to shut down the invader is a good idea also... it can be a pain in the rear end.
the control alt delete you should get a list of currently active programs if you find that invader in that list try and shut it down just long enough that you can get them to stop!
thanks. i hope this sorta helps.

i would try to kill it before you re-install windows,i had a similar virus a year ago but managed to clean it after using around 4 avp(anti-virus program)
you havent mentioned your current avp,but the first port of call should be microsoft, and run their malicous software removal tool, you can run this from http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx,this will scan for the most nastiest viruses, once you have done this you should try these in this order(stop when virus is removed)
1. avg http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
2. avast http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
3. f-secure trial http://www.f-secure.com/download-purchase/list.shtml
4. panda trial http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/Software/
5. e-trust av trial http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/
the etrust anti virus is a excellent anti-virus,and with a 1 year trial its as good as any £40 payed virus software, avg and avast are good free avp but are limited in their protection
panda and f-secure are very good as they also include firewalls, and these are the ones most likely to get rid of the problem virus
also you can also give the macafee "stinger" a try ,its similar to the microsoft tool, and can be used in conjunction with a exsisting avp
if you cant move this virus, after trying everything else a re-install of windows will be the only option.
good luck

you could PAY for an anti-virus prog
but there are loads of good free ones
check out the Free one at AVG (you will have to look hard, but there is a free one there)
also lavasoft for their Free antispyware
DON'T FORMAT - that is like taking car to pieces when the tappets want adjust, you have to adjust in the end anyway
If you have registered version of windows you can get
"Defender" from microsoft

probably best to reformat at this stage, but if you don't want to, maybe spend some money and get one of the well known virus checkers to see if that can delete it.
