Third shift is the night shift. If you break up the day, 24 hours, into three 8 hour pieces, first shift is the "normal working hours" shift, second shift follows, and third is after that. Another way to look at the so-called "graveyard shift" is that it takes place right before the "nine-to-five" shift.

Usually 1 a.m. to 9 a.m., or midnight to 8 a.m. I worked 3rd shift one place where it was 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Depends on how the workplace structures it. Sometimes it's called the graveyard shift - it just means the middle of the night shift.

Overnight. It could start as early as 8:00pm and it could end as late as 10:00am. Pretty much anytime in between those two times usually count. The general choices though are 11:00pm to 7:00am or 12:00 midnight to 8:00am.

depends on the company, but 10 to 4 is what my former company used. i have also seen midnight to 6 as the third shift. at any rate, it is always the midnight shift.
YES - the third shift got paid for EIGHT hours, even though they worked SIX hours.

Well from a third shifter in IL. I work at champion labortories making air gas and fuel filters and I start at 10:30 p.m. and get off at 7:00 a.m. there is a half hour lunch I don't get paid for so that is why we have a extra half hour...the real question is when does a third shifter sleep.......for real....I try to lay down about 10:00a.m. and go to get my monkeys (kids) at 3:00....not much sleep

11:00 PM to 8:00 AM, or 12:00AM to 8:00AM. Depends on how your employer works it out. Been doing it since 2001. Gets hard on the old body after awhile.
