In answer to your question, NO, it has nothing to do with locale. Gmail's FREE email service is highly recommended for those who want a completely 'blind' email. Gmail does not include the sender's IP address as part of the header, thus making it difficult (if at all) to trace any Gmail Mail.
In addition, Gmail touts their interface as better than most. One of the more unique aspects of Gmail is that emails are laid out together, that is all y our emails from George are connected in a sort of chain, or thread, so that you can more easily see what was sent versus what was received etc. A nice interface, good layout and privacy.
Gmail is free, through Google, and at one time the only way to get a Gmail account is to receive an "Invite" froma current member. These days, the invites are available just about everywhere. You dont' need anything to join, not a cell number, not a real name, not even another email address. It's quite private in that respect.

gmail is google's email service. but what makes google mail so special is that not everyone can have a gmail account. It is by invite only and the mailbox size for gmail is more than 2GB!! Could save a lot of mails n things over there. But its still a beta version at the moment.

GMail is an e-mail service provided by Google, similar to Yahoo! mail and others. The big difference with GMail is that you literally have gigabytes of storage space for your mail, and the normal option for your mail is to archive it, not delete it. Thus, you have a permanent online archive of your GMail.
One thing that I have started using my GMail account for is an archive of documents and small files that I want to keep. That way, if my PC crashes and I lose my local files, I still have the copies I sent to GMail.

gmail is short of Google Mail where you have 2.8 GB of storage space. Also, if you have a Mozilla Firefox browser with GSpace plugin installed, you can upload/download files there.

You have to be invited by another gmail user to get a gmail address. My boyfriend has one, and invited me to get one, but I don't really need another e-mail address, so I haven't taken him up on it.
