According to CNN, Fidel Castro has ceded his power to his younger brother, citing intestinal problems. This is said to be temporary, but in the history of his presidency, Castro has NEVER ceded power before. Is he gone for good?

I'm from Miami originally. I was there before Castro siezed power in Cuba, and watched Miami change as the years passed.
Even if Castro dies, his BROTHER Raoul will take power, and Raoul is an incompetent drunk! Not much will change, either in Cuba, or Miami, or the U.S. policies toward Cuba.
So, whether or not Castro is gone for good, is unimportant. Cuba will not change until or unless the Cuban people effect those changes. VIVA la Revolucion!!

It is common for a leader to cede powers to another person when they go in for a medical procedure. It is done so that if he dies, power has already been transferred. Otherwise, you could have a situation where no one is officially in power, and some may want to overthrow the government. It has been done in America several times.

I do not think so as what I know he is having some kind of operation. When a leader of a country undergoes an operation then is normal procedure for them to turn over the country over tothe next in command until the operation is finished in case something happens and they are in a coma or die.

Lets hope. He has oppressed the Cubans enough. Most people do not celebrate when someone is dying, but than again most people were pretty happy when Ken Lay was dead too.
