If our bodies are naturally 98.6 degrees, then why would 90 or 95 degrees outside tempurature be so hot to us??? Why would the summer heat be so excessive when our bodies are warmer anyway? I have wondered this since I was little, and never got a real answer! Thanks ;-)

Because our bodies are like little machines that take in fuel, do work and have heat as a waste product (among other things).

When the temperature outside is close to or above our internal body temperature, the heat inside our body has a much harder time dissipating which is why we feel hot and sweat. The perspiration helps cool us as it evaporates.

It truly isn't just the heat, it's the humidity. Even a little humidity will make the temperature feel much worse in that temperature range. And I can guarantee I'm not 98.6 all over--you internal temperature is that, but areas further out won't be that hot--try holding a thermometer in your hand and see if it still registers 98.6.

"physiological stress induced by excessive heat or cold that can impair functioning and cause injury or death. Exposure to intense heat increases body temperature and pulse rate. If body temperature is sufficiently high, sweating may cease, the skin may become dry, and deeper and faster breathing may follow. Headaches, nausea, disorientation, fainting, and unconsciousness also may occur. The initial symptom of cold stress is pain in exposed areas. Continued exposure may lead to numbness, mental confusion, lethargy, and irregular heartbeat...."
