There are currently 4 types of stem cell research funded by the US federal government - Adult (ASC), placental (PSC), blood (BSC) and embryonic (ESC).

When Bush gave the first [yes, the first] federal funding to ESC research, it was on existing lines of research, where the embryo had already been destroyed. But, at that time he resolutely said that he would not support any federal spending on destruction of any more embryos. If people wanted to pursue that, they could use their own money.

Despite many people just knee-jerking a reaction against Bush, this is a very important question in the realm of scientific ethics. Many people - scientists, ethicists, etc. - are wary of a cavalier and callous destruction of human life forms solely for profit and research. This is because there is not much difference between an embryo and a fetus, except a few weeks of developmental time. They also do not support cloning of embryos (cloning of human life!) for this research.

It really deserves a much more thoughtful approach than the typical "Bush is an evil idiot fundamentalist" knee-jerk spasms of the left.

Stem cell research is not the problem, it is embryonic stem cell research. And the reason for the president's veto, despite an overwhelming percentage of the country in favor of the research, is a moral/religious issue. The conservative wing of the Republican party is against the research for the same reasons they are against abortion, and the president agrees with them. Right or wrong, they feel that the potential scientific advances do not outweigh the rights and/or sanctity of a "potential" human life.

Stem cells can be retrieved from developing embryos - newly created babies.

This, of course, kills the embryo.
Many people (the religious mostly) feel this may be murdering a person and scavenging their parts.

Those people feel stem cell research is being powered by murdering new babies.

What we need is a BIG source of stem cells that doesnt involve fetuses.

Stem cell research is approved and George Bush was the first president to approve federal funding to support the research. What Bush vetoed last week was INCREASED funding proposal. You really need to get all the news, not just snippets from your liberal friends.

Stem Cell research is perfectly legal in the United States. All that was stopped was federal funding.

Stem Cell Research can be funded. It is the use of EMBRYONIC stem cell which is controversial. We don't know when life begins, but to destroy these potential lives to harvest from them is grotesque.
There are many other sources of stem cell for research that don't put us into this ethical dilemma.
