I bought a red eared slider from Chinatown a few days ago, and all the food I have is Nufatrin Max pellets. All I have is a very small cage that can hold maybe 1 gallon of water. In my cage there is the turtle and 3 rocks. What should I do?

1. Bigger cage. Turtles should have a MINIMUM of 10 gallons of swimming space per inch of turtle. This gives them room to hunt, minimized the smells, encourages proper development and reduces stress.

2. Look at a good website for basic cares adn diet. See below.

3. Find a good way to heat and clean the water in the tank. See the site for ideas.

4. Provide proper lighting per the site

5. Learn about turtle nutrition at the site.

Turtles are not easy pets- they require a rather expensive and extensive set up for proper health, but once things are up and running, they will be a fun pet for 20+ years!

No offense but if that is all the equipment you have for a pet turtle you had no business buying one. One gallon isn't even enough water for them to move around in. You have to get a proper tank with ventilation,I would recommend at least a 40 gallon or else you will have to upgrade again later. A underwater reptile filter is a necessity due to the amount of bacteria they produce.A heat bulb preferably 100 watt that hooks onto the top of the tank will also be needed, with out lighting reptiles will not be able to digest their food and will ether stop eating or eventually die. Red eared sliders need a water temperature of 75 degrees. It also needs a habitat that allows both land and water accessibility. They spend alot of time basking and need a rock or buildup to lay on under the light. A diet of dried pellets isn't enough nutrients either. They have a diet consisting of small goldfish, earthworms and snails. They will also eat plant matter and trout pellets. Hope all this helps just remember its all vital to their survival.

Here's an idea Don't bring home animals that you don't know how to care for. Turtles need a big space. Check out this page for some care sheets and info before you kill the turtle. http://www.austinsturtlepage.com
