Accurate results is a relative term. All search engines "stack the deck," with sponsoring sites.
Additionally, junk sites (porn, etc) will enter common search criteria and add that data into the tags used to compile searches. Eventually, those junk sites filter into the upper results for the search engines.
For one site, which lists "top searches," if you page to the second page, usually half of those listed are such junk sites, and by page 4, almost all are such.

Guessing what you're searching for? probably none. It's not really a search engines job to guess. If your results aren't spectacular you may want to consider revising your search terms.
However, that said, I find that metacrawler is highly effective, as it returns results from numerous search engines from one single search. So you'll get results from yahoo and google and various other lesser known engines as well.. it's pretty neat, I reccommend trying it at least once:
http://www.metacrawler.com
as for tips on how to revise your search terms, look for info about boolean searches, and check with the specific engines for their implimentation of that. Also, both google and yahoo offer the "advanced search" option, which is basically the same as a boolean search, just that you fill out a template rather than use the symbols or keywords.

Images directory can be very hard to be precise because a picture tells a thousand words. Other than searching in Google, try Yahoo Image Search and Ask Image Search.

Google has gone to hades in the last few years.
If I type some words (or sentences) in quotes I expect (hope) that I will only get hits with those exact strings in them.
INSTEAD I get hundreds of half baked hits
Google has deteriorated severely over the last few years.
I STRONGLY recommend instead -
DuckDuckGo
and to a lesser degree -
DogPile
Rob
PS I do not give a toss about privacy, but for those of you that do, you should also check out DuckDuckGo

Yahoo, Google and Bing all give too many totally irrelevant results mixed in with possible wanted results. They are taking pride in returning millions of results instead of "accurate" results.
