Jimmie Page, Of: Led Zepplin & Jimmie Hendrix..........Jimmie Hendrix, could play the "Star Spangle Banner" with his teeth!! Whoah, and Page, was so Hot,on guitar !!! I saw Led Zepplin in Concert, in L.A., before the band broke-up, and after John Bonham died, from his own vomit....... We were bummed that John still wasn't around, it just wasn't quite the same, without him, but they did very well improvisiing without John!!!!

Jimi Hendrix for rock/soul (and there are a ton of great guitarists but hes at the top of the list) - he changed how people thought of the guitar - and every rock guitarist has been influenced by him since.

However, take a listen to Chet Akins - great guitarist (and guys like Mark Knopler call him the best)

I also throw in Wes Montgomery - best jazz guitarist
Andres Segovia - best Classical guitarist
and Paco De Lucia - best Flamenco guitarist

come on you guys, everyone knows its Jimmy Page! You really should check out some of Led Led Zeppelins DVDs and you will agree.a couple of them are Led Zeppelin,a two DVD set of live performances of them from 1968 to 1979. And of course there is the movie The Song Remains The Same, which also has some great live performances
