Probably his brother Rauel would assume power, as he has now while Fidel is recovering from surgery. But at 75, Rauel would only be a temporary leader at best. Now, some decent size oil fields have been found in cuban waters, and foreign investors have been leasing areas to the northwest of Cuba for exploration and development. Cuba is about to come into some money. If Fidel dies, Rauel may suddenly find that the US wants to be his friend.

First, I'll have to take a close look at the political structure of the country, and how well that structure is instituted. Second, one has to look at the people's political inclinations, and how likely it is (or not) to see a revolt occur in their midst. Third, if Castro has already appointed an efficient leader to succeed him. Last would be to see whether religion is suppressed in Cuba as it used to be in Russia, and whether or not the people are religious. This certainly would have its say in the matter, no?

Well, let me put this out there, and see if people agree.
Yes, Fidel is old. However, how sick is he really?
Didn't the whole coup in Russia in 1990 that eventually ended Communism in Russia start with a story leaking that Gorbachev was sick? I also thought there was a story leaked that Gorbachev had actually died. Well, you can't be a world leader if you're sick, or worse yet, dead. Is this another coup situation? I'm just curious...

The fate of Cuban people will decide as to whether to switchover to democratic system or not if the great leader dies. There is always a gap after legendary figures pass away.As many people have predicted that his brother will take over.As far as Mr.Kerry is concerned there are no Hopes.

In my humble opinion, I would say that if and when Fidel Castro dies, my guess is they would PROBABLY bury him (unless he has a taxidermist on staff of course in which case the country will NEVER be rid of him)

Odds are his brother will take over. And the people of Little Havana would rejoice, like they did last night, good Christians that they are...

He will probably be embalmed and put in a glass case and put on display in Havana, just like Lenin is in Moscow

probably a lot of chaos at first, as it always happens when one country switches from an individual regime (to whatever). and then, it largely depends on how satisfied cubans are with communism.
