I'd love it if they were called 'fuppies'. But someone with a cruel sense of humour (and a tolerance for annoying little bones) decreed that they'd be called 'fry.' As in:
L'IL FISH: 'Mommy, why are we called 'fry?'
MAMA FISH: 'Because you will, honey. Because you will. BWA HA HA!*
*If you don't believe that fish actually say 'BWA HA HA!' then watch 'em real, real close in an aquarium. You see that extra burst of little bubbles escaping from their mouths? Yep, that's them saying 'BWA HA HA!'

Baby fish after usually hatching from eggs are called Fry.
Interestingly some sharks give birth to live young and these are called Pups.

I know that some species of fish are called "fry" when they're small, not sure if it applies to all baby fish, though.

Hi, depending on its size in grams baby fish are called either
1.Fries
2.Fingerling's/Advanced fingerling's
3.Juveniles/Advanced juveniles.
They advance through stages one to three at different time frames usually months but this really depends on the type of fish.
