He shot himself in the chest with a pistol.

I do not think anyone will ever know why someone truly commits suicide. I knwo his life was troubled, but other then that it is a mystery.

Gogh left Saint Remey in 1890 and began contacting his Brother Theo. Van Gogh continued working and created a number of pieces; nearly one painting day. Gogh viewed his life as horribly wasted, personally failed, and impossible. On 27 July 1890 Van Gogh attempted suicide by shooting himself in the chest. He survived, but died two days later from the wound.

He shot himself and then died from it. He had a troubled life. His mother was mean to him. He wanted to be accepted all of his life. But he would put his paint brush in his mouth when he painted. The paint was full of lead and it affected his brain. His mother lived to see her son declared a genious and his paintings were selling for enormous amounts of money. His mother threw out boxes of his paintings!
