The original factory equipment came with 2 options regardless of which TT model you have (1.8 FWD, 1.8 Quattro or 3.2 Quattro). The standard size is 225/45/17 and there was a factory option to go up to 225/40-18.

The recmmendation depends on your driving style. If you want a sporty feel go with the larger rim (18's). By going with the 17" rim and the 225/45/17 tire you will have a less "harsh" ride.

I would go with the factory size. If you choose a different size, and the diameter is extremely different from the original factory sets, then your speedometer will be off. For instances, if your new tire's diameter is smaller, then you will be going slower than what the speedometer indicates.

Remember, the bigger the wheels the slower the acceleration/deceleration (assuming stock engine) because it takes more power to complete a full circle and the rims are heavier. This is the opposite for smaller wheels.

Also for handling, the shorter the sidewall is, the better the handling. That's why the TT comes with 18 inch options. Usually, you can find smaller sidewalls on bigger tires.
