A recent scientific study was reported by Johns Hopkins Medical School:

The study volunteers had an average age of 46, had never used hallucinogens, and participated to some degree in religious or spiritual activities such as prayer, meditation, discussion groups or religious services. Each tried psilocybin during one visit to the lab and the stimulant methylphenidate (better known as Ritalin) on one or two other visits. Only six of the volunteers knew when they were getting psilocybin.

Each visit lasted eight hours. The volunteers lay on a couch in a living-room-like setting, wearing an eye mask and listening to classical music. They were encouraged to focus their attention inward.

Psilocybin's effects lasted for up to six hours, Griffiths said. Twenty-two of the 36 volunteers reported having a "complete" mystical experience, compared with four of those getting methylphenidate.

That experience included such things as a sense of pure awareness and a merging with ultimate reality, a transcendence of time and space, a feeling of sacredness or awe, and deeply felt positive mood like joy, peace and love. People say "they can't possibly put it into words," Griffiths said.

I can't spell the medication I was given in the hospital, something like amitripoline, it was for sleep. I was also taking vicodin for pain.
There was a painting on the wall opposite of the foot of the bed. It was a forest path with tall trees and shrubs along the sides. I was propped up and turned my head sideways and as I turned I saw something moving fast down the trail. Iturned back quickly and saw something like a white dog or a fox run into the shrubs.

Couldn't believe what I saw , I couldn't see anything when I looked at the painting full on. I kept turning my head sideways over and over and each time I would see the small white animal running and I tried to get my head in a position where I could see the animal running and identify it. Actually I wanted to prove to myself it was really there! I finally went to sleep and when I woke up, I couldn't make the animal appear.

It kept happening on and off and I made the mistake of telling the nurse and when our family doctor came in he was laughing and told me that the nurse had written that I might need a mental evaluation because I was hallucinating. Turns out that hallucinations were a rare side effect of the amitrytoline. I can still close my eyes and see the painting and the animal in detail,

My husband said he always thought I needed my head examined. LOL

Well, okay I will tell you. But mind you this was many years ago that I did this. I was a stupid kid and would never do this again.
I huffed rubber cement glue. To most people they would think this really doesn't have any affect but I can honestly say that on this drug was the furthest away from reality that I had ever felt. I am saying this tops pot, X , coke, and alchol. The "best" trip I had on it was I was at a beach all of a sudden and could feel the sand under my toes when reality I was sitting in my best friends bedroom on the bed in indiana. So there ya go....my 12 year old drug experience. Oh that came out wrong...I mean I was twelve when I did it.

Tryptophan based compound are illegal now unless they come in a natural form like turkey. They make people sleepy they are not halluconincogenic. Go to a medical library for this if it truly is for a reseach project. Sleep is different than hallucination.
