I'm from Cambridge, MA. A city right next to Boston. If I was in another state, away from New England and someone asked where I was from should I say Cambridge or Boston. I'm assuming they wouldn't know where Cambridge is unless they know where Harvard is.

I grew up in a suburb of Detroit called Wayne Mi.
When I went to college down south, I always just told people I was from Detroit. If I said Wayne, they had no idea.

Now when people ask, I say I am originally from Detroit but live in Brooklyn.
Hope that helps.

People know where Cambridge is.
One of my favorite lawyer jokes is: "The only thing I hate more than people who went to THE law school -- is that everyone knows which law school it is."

But as to the question, if I'm in Wisconsin or the Midwest, I'll usually say Racine. Farther out, i'll say Wisconsin.
