i just need a computer that has XP so i can use certain programs like adobe reader 7 and such. right now i have a 10 year old gateway with 733 mhz pentium 3 proccessor and i play games like civ3 and sim city 4(barely plays sim city 4 so i quit playing it) i've also only got 192 ram. and i run windows ME(wich sucks). so i've been thinking of getting a cheaper walmart sold PC with a celeron or sempron processor both of wich have at least 512 of ram and windows XP. some even have flat screen monitors all for around 400 bucks( am on a budget preparing to bring my fiancee into the country). what should i get? will this new system with non pentium processors play my old games?(i'm not worried about playing the newer graphic intensive games.) some one with good computer Knowlege please help.

I'd personally recommend that you spend a tiny bit more, and get any of these computers: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductCompare.asp?SubCategory=10&CompareItemList=N82E16883103012%2CN82E16883102668%2CN82E16883102673%2CN82E16883107016%2CN82E16883107027%2CN82E16883107101%2CN82E16883103011R

They're all 7 or 8 times as fast as your PIII, all have at least 512MB of RAM, 16X DVD burners, a 16X PCI-E video card slot, and built-in memory card readers, and none cost more than $500. For $400, you get hardly anything, when buying a pre-built computer.

Yes.. The processor type will almost never make a difference on its ability to play the games, BUT only the overall performance when it does play them. A pentium is usually the best way to go, but compared to what you had, you could go with a good priced (even used) celeron pc and still have good performance in comparison.

Gives some info, but just google for the difference between the 2 and you should get more detail.

Anything you can run with a 733 mhz and Windows ME ( your a brave one lol) will definitly run on those chips. They are just the cheaper chip compared to pentium 4 but its not like your going to be hardcore gaming. You should be more then alright playing simcity and what not. Maybee make an upgrade on the RAM ( the more the merrier ;). Hope this helps you out , and good luck!

Please don't buy a Walmart PC as they are generally low quality and are often running Linux instead of Windows (not a bad thing in itself but you have to know Linux.)

The main problem you will have gaming on a $400 pc is not the processor it will be the Video card. You will probably have an onboard graphics processor which usually pretty bad when it comes to gaming.

My suggestion is twofold:

1) Check out www.dell.com and see what you can get for your $400.

2) After you buy it, try to save up another $150 or so for a video card upgrade to improve your gaming performance.

Windows x-p at least a gig of ram and a speed of 2.4 mhz might do it. Dell sells one for $299, but with Windows home edition and x-p is extra. If the celeron has a speed over 2 mhz you should be all right. Add more ram for more speed.
