basically it's trying to tell us we are still in the evolutionary stage, we started with monkeys learning to use tools.
But the tool was not for good, but to concur, hurt and defeat others.
The monolith was a sign from an advanced life, telling us we are not ready, ( we have not changed from our primitive mindset) and we have a long way to go.
Look around us, war, greed, lust, hate.

Look at children, when they do not get what they want (greed) they throw a temper tantrums scream, kick, bite (war), and if they do not get what they want they do things to annoy you (hate)

Exactly. I've been watching this film for nearly 40 years and I still can't fathom it. I reread the book. Nothing there.

It means that we, the human civilization, are going to spread our seed through the Universe (starting first, of course, by colonize our own galaxy). That we are just getting started, (our civilization it still in dippers) but we have to believe in our final goal, in our amazing fate as human race, we deserve it. We will prevail! My best wishes for you.

Yeah.

You need to read the book to understand the film. Otherwise you just get to enjoy it visually.
