I was thinking of inviting them over and 'accidentally' leaving out the receipt the NAACP gave me for tax purposes. Is this the best way to do it? How can I let it slip that I'm planning to adopt an African orphan?

Why is it important for them to know? I think you should do it not for the recognition but for the cause. You are taking this way too far, i mean accidentally leave out the receipt? They shouldn't be your friends just because you give money to a familiar cause, they should want to be your friend because of what you have to offer through your personality. Now about adoption, just tell them you are looking into the idea of adopting, why is the race thing so important to you?
