In 2006 Slade was studying for A-levels at Itchen College, Southampton. After Walcott's selection for the World Cup, she requested privacy from the media and said that she would not be taking any decisions about various commercial offers she had received until the World Cup was over [4].
Despite the attention that they received, stories about Slade around this time were generally rather mundane. Aside from some mildly salacious photographs of her published by The Sun newspaper (19 May 2006), they included her involvement in a "Race for Life" organised by the charity Cancer Reserach UK [5]; Walcott's present to her of a Volkswagen "Beetle" car (a "love bug" with the number plate M444 T4M - "Theo for Melanie") [6]; and the possibility that she would take part in a post-World Cup television "reality" show, provisionally called F W Boutique, in which WAGs would compete to create and run clothing stores.
Slade was the subject also of a number of websites [7] and "image galleries" [8] on the Internet. Coverage was such that, by mid July 2006, about 50,000 references to her could be found via the Google search engine.

Melanie Slade is the girlfriend of Arsenal footballer Theo Walcott. Melanie and Theo first met outside the shop where Mel worked at West Quay shopping mall in Southampton. Melanie was outside with a basket in her hand when Walcott's friend announced "the basket is for phone numbers".
He scribbled his his mobile number on a scrap of paper and tossed it into Mel's basket. Theo did the same. The romance had begun... Theo Walcott and Melanie Slade have been an item ever since!
Walcott has told the media he and Melanie made a bet as to who could pass their driving test first... Melanie won, Theo having failed his first test and Melanie passing hers first time.
No hard feelings, though. Theo splashed out £20,000 on a white VW beetle for Mel, affectionately known by as the 'Love Bug'. Theo even registered the number plate T4M symbolising 'Theo for Melanie'.

No surprise then that in May 2006, UK Tabloid newspaper The Sun offered Ms. Slade £160,000 for a topless photo shoot!
Mel accepted the offer and actually appeared topless in The Sun on 19 May 2006, although she did tastefully cover her breasts with her hands!
Melanie is currently supporting the 2006 Race for Life event organised by Cancer Research UK. Despite this, and the World Cup, she's asked for privacy whilst she revises for her exams.
Mel has said she would not be making any decisions about the various media offers she has received until after the World Cup Football. We wait in anticipation!
