Steven S, you are an idiot. Ortiz has been intentionally walked numeorus times this season, so that pitchers could take their chances with Manny. Manny is great, but his past has nothing to do with this year, and this year Ortiz is the MVP. If Manny catches him in the power numbers maybe you have an argument, but I do not see that happening.

I reserve the right to call anyone an idiot, especially when I do not agree with their opinion.

Look, don't ask for people's opinions and then call them idiots if they happen to disagree with you-- especially if they are being civil.
With that being said, I can't argue with you. Manny's average is higher, but Ortiz is just mashing the ball like nobody's business. RBIs are a pretty poor measure of a player's worth, but Ortiz is delivering them in a big way. I don't care that he never plays the field. He's still the most valuable hitter on the team... although I've also heard some rumblings that Papelbon should get consideration for ROY, MVP and Cy Young. He probably won't get many votes for the last two, although you certainly could make a case for him.

Sorry, but Manny is the real MVP. His batting average is better than Ortiz's, his SLG is better, his OBP is better. His fielding is better than people give him credit for. The reason Ortiz has so many game winning hits is because pitchers are more afraid of Manny, so they have to pitch to Ortiz.
You're the idiot if you are completely ignorant of the numbers. Manny and Ortiz have virtually the same SLG, but Manny's OBP is almost 40 points higher. That's because Manny doesn't have one of the game's best hitters protecting him, so he leads the league in walks. Manny should get an assist for every RBI Ortiz gets, because he's the reason Ortiz sees so many good pitches.
The worst thing you can do as a hitter is make an out, and so far this season Ortiz has made 39 more outs than Manny. That's a game and a half worth of outs right there. When you add in the fact that Manny plays defense, it's a no brainer that Manny is more valuable than Ortiz.
Admittedly, the team would be completely sunk without either of them. But Manny is better.

I think Ortiz is the best clutch hitter of all times, the best DH of all times, and an all around great guy. I do NOT think, though, that a DH should be MVP, no matter how outstanding a DH he is. To be MVP, a player needs all five tools (which is why I'm also not a big fan of AL pitchers being MVP). He's a great hitter, but he's not producing outs against the other team, which is the other half of a baseball players job.
If Boston wins the pennant, and as a Yankees fan, it's hard for me to say this, Manny should be MVP. He's an excellent fielder as well as a hitter and run producer. He's got all the tools; Ortiz does not.

I'm a Blue Jays fan, so the Red Sox aren't my favorite team.
However, there can't be even a shred of doubt that David Ortiz is the best player in the American League right now. Does it matter that he doesn't play the field every day? No, because he's making up for the lack of a glove with his hitting, and he shouldn't be punished simply because some people don't like the DH rule.
Nothing is guaranteed yet, and I still think his teammate Manny has a shot. However, if the vote happened today, there's no way you can't give it to Big Papi.

I agrre w/ Steve. Ortiz is definately the MVP of July passing Ted Williams team record of 13 HR's in a month. I will not deny the fact he hits alot of game winning hits. I HATE MANNY being MANNY, BUT there are a few factors that need to be strongly considered:
1) It is hard to IBB someone when there is a DEFINATE Hall of Famer batting behind you in the line-up. (I know The Red Sox Nation will scream in an uproar that I am referring to Manny as the only future HOF out of the 2, but if their career's were to end this year that is the plain truth of the matter. Manny is a future HOF Papi is not (yet))
2) I have to go back to the EXACT same reason he did not win the MVP last year, HE DOES NOT PLAY DEFENSE. If you are going to say that he should make it on his batting alone, then I say to you why not Francisco Liriano? Why Not Jonathan Papelbon? Why not Mo Rivera? Why not Travis Hafner? I'll tell you why not, because they are one dimensional players. In baseball you need prevent runs with defense just as much as you need to score runs with offense.
Now I am not taking away from any of the accomplishments these outstanding players have done, but I do understand the criteria that the voters look at in the voting process.
Is David Ortiz the MVP of the Red Sox? I say if he can win or tie the game with one swing of the bat I am walking him, and if I can walk manny I'll walk him too and take my chances with Lowell, Varitek, and Crisp.
Will he win the award? I say No.
One last point who is the league MVP to me?
Red Sox Make it to post season= Manny
If Yankees= Derek Jeter

Oh, and he saved the game last night, which I was at! He has 12 career walk off hits to save the game as a Red Sox! Amazing! I think he was in there pretty close with ARod for the MVP spot last year, so I hope this year people realize what MVP really means, and give it to Big Papi!

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY is better than BIG PAPI !!! It's his 6th sense man, he always comes through when he has to. I'm so happy I've got his card autographed. I'm gonna keep that forever.
Hey nfaustman,,,, who do u think should be MVP ?? The Gay-Rod A-Rod again ?????!!! So what if he doesn't play the field, he is doing his job. And nobody does there job better than Ortiz. Might I add, when he does use the glove he's pretty good .

Nobody is better at power hitting in the clutch, but MVP? No. Thats crazy. How can a player truly be an MVP if they don't play in the field.? Its a sad day in baseball if and when a DH wins MVP.
Sidenote: perhaps they should test him for 'roids.

Last year, you could make an argument if you wanted to...this year, there is NO DOUBT...I don't care if he never plays the field ever again, he is UNBELIEVABLE!!! And unless he suffers a total collapse or someone else suddenly goes historically crazy over the last two months, he is ABSOLUTELY the MVP of the AL.
