There are many online stores where you can legally buy songs, such as iTunes and Napster. But if you're looking for free music, then this isn't actually legal. You can use a p2p (peer-to-peer) program to do this, and the program is legal, but it is illegal to actually use it to download copyrighted material. However, many people do it, and it is generally safe if you're smart.
Limewire is a simple, easy program that is especially great for downloading individual songs. The program is free of spyware/malware, but you can get spyware/viruses/etc. by downloading infected files if you're not careful.
A great p2p system, especially for downloading full albums and popular files is called Bittorrent. This is a little more complicated as it is not contained into one program like Limewire. There are many bittorrent clients you can use, including the official bittorrent client, and ABC, which I use. And you can not search for files in the program, instead you must use an internet bittorrent search engine such as torrentspy.com, thepiratebay.org, or the official bittorrent.com to find files to download. Some good things about bittorrent are people can share a folder containing an album or discography instead of just individual songs, and on many bittorrrent sites, people can comment on a torrent, a way to find out if you're downloading what you think you are, and if it's safe. You can also customize/personalize how you use it by picking you client and which search engines you use. However, with bittorrent it can be harder to get less common files, as it survives by many people downloading a file.

Napster.com - U guys should b knowin that Napster is the pioneer in Mp3 s.h.i.t. They were runnin it free n now they r chargin u for downloads. Its legal now n its the best when it comes to pay n download. All the other sites r real crap cos i paid to get a membership from a site n downloaded few songs of em which had glitches n pauses. So y take chances even if its 10cent a song ... Money is money.

The key word is 'legally'.
Limewire, WinMX, and the other programs like them are NOT a legal way to acquire music.
Depending on the type of music you like, the three best are ITunes, Real Rhapsody, and the new Napster.
If you like indie music, then go with E-Music.com.
