I used to walk about 4 miles every other day. I had a heart cath done last fall and quit walking because the weather got cold and I was having heart problems which are now resolved. I took off to go my usual route this morning and thought I was going to collapse less than 1/2 the way, so I shortened the walk. Should I start walking shorter distances and work up to it or should I get another excersize program going here? My heart is working great. This is the 1st time I have walked in over 5 months.

My cardiologist wants me out walking. He said he thought I would get more benefit from walking than bicycling. I am 42 yrs old and about 50 lbs over weight. This is all in his plan to drop my cholesterol and wt.

You just had a major surgery, your body is still healing.
Just start out slow, after my last surgery I joined Curves & have never felt so good.
The women there will incourage you & help you work up to your normal 5 miles a day.
Good Luck.

First off, make sure you have a doctor's OK to exercise.

Second, if you've been off for 5 months, then yes, you will need to scale back your walk a bit for a while to work up to your previous distance. Pick a new route, maybe something with a park bench around 1/2 way, where you can sit, stretch, drink water, etc., then continue your walk.

Good luck!
