When Windows 95 was released it offered a much simplified and easier graphical user interface (GUI) as well as many other features. However, compared to today's operating systems (OS), including Windows XP (the latest from Microsoft), Windows 95 lacks a lot, including stability, security, less compatibility with peripherals just to name a few difference.

I would not even consider installing Windows 95 on any computer today. At the very least, I would use Windows 98 which offers better stability and security. However, if you plan to buy a new computer, I would wait just a few months longer until Microsoft releases the next generation in OS called Vista.

About the only operating system Windows 95 has an advantage over are DOS and Windows 3.1. All newer operating systems are much more stable and much more secure. They will also give you better performance(depending on your machine specs) due to more effecient memory management. You will also get more features as you move forward in time; for example, early versions of Windows 95 do not support USB.

If you fast forward to Windows XP you get a more user friendly interface, more robust administrative options, better file system, more efficient use of disk space, the advantages are just too numerious to mention.

As a final consideration, keep in mind that Windows 95 is long past its support cycle and Microsoft no longer issues security patches for it which means that none of the existing security holes will ever get fixed.

windows 95 OSR2 (supports FAT32), 98, 98 SE, NT, Me, 2000, XP all include 95's technologies, so it is obvious they are better and more stable (except Me :)) ).
but if you asked...
advantages:
- it runs on very low resources
disadvantages:
- the original 95 supported only FAT16, and it couldn't be installed on a logical partition (only primary)
- microsoft removed support for it, not talking about all other companies (try looking for a SLI driver for windows 95 and you'll see what I mean)
- it doesn't run on many of todays pc components (simply because there is no driver for it and never will be)
- it's highly vulnerable to network attacks
- you'll hardly find any software written for this platform! (doesn't mean you can't use the old one, but again you won't have support for it)
Regarding comparing it to Linux, there really isn't much to say!

One advantage is that because this operating system is obsolete, you can probably get it free. The disadvantage is that it is obsolete: Microsoft does not support it, and software vendors do not support it either. Most new software programs will not run on it.
