It isn't so much the price of the gift its the meaning of the gift. Me and my friends whenever its some one's birthday we usually know what they want. If that isn't the case then i usually go for a gift thats either an inside joke or something that i put alot of thought into. For my birthday my friend (who was in the same situatuion as you) got me a State Trooper's hat. Why because we went to go see the movie "Super Troopers" and it was one of my favorite films. Though I am never gonna where the thing in public it has meaning and shows our friendship. So think of something special you and your friend share and im sure he will treasure it more than anything....

How about a picture frame with a picture of the two of you together with a simple friendship card. A friend doesn't need expensive gifts, just a reminder that you still care.

You dont need to buy a gift, give him friendship. Let him know you are there for him and value his friendship, otherwise just take him out for lunch. Send him a friendship gift voucher write it yourself. Like life time friends, a dinner, a walk in the park. Real friends dont expect presents they just need to know you are thinking of them and wish them the best.
