Because it is derived from the game called football which was played at Rugby School, the same way that Rugby Football is.
It is usually assumed that the name "football" derives from the fact that the foot is used to propel the ball forwards, but nowadays many scholars believe that it is more likely that it was used to denote a ball game played ON FOOT, as opposed to on horseback.

Originally American football involved drop kicking to score 2 points, and punting was done from the regular formation (a la a "quickkick") Kicking was an intregal part of the original game.

I'm not American but I assume it's 'cause the game was derived from what we call football and the Americans call Soccer.
By the way Rugby is actualy called "Rugby Football" and all rugby clubs are "rugby football clubs".

Just to piss off the rest of the World, and give them a stupid question to ask. Why do we call the game Kickball, when you only kick it ONCE. Maybe soccer should be called kickball, since you just kick it around most of the game.

Actually, because the ball was a foot long. Hence the name. And, by the way, we were calling our game Football before you Brits were callng your game football. You actually called your game "soccer" as a derivative of "aSOCCiation ball."

Why isn't soccer just called soccer? There is only one kind of football.... it's American.... you may just want to get over it and accept it as the most popular sport in the US.

The english call soccer 'football' and they play with their hands too.
(goalkeeper...throw-in's)
They also bounce the ball on their head.
Shouldn't it be called head-hand-football?

As much as i hate to do this....Technically speaking, it is also playd with the feet.
You have a ball and have to keep "running" with it.
Personally I think it is silly boys rugby but thats just my opinion.
