I think what you probably need to do is take some classes or courses on computer programming. You will need a degree I wud think in order to actually do this, unless you know how to do it already. Thats all the help I can offer.. hope it helps..

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* The Web Hosting Manager by Christoph Puetz
* Strategies for Web Hosting and Managed Services by Doug Kaye
* Setting up a Web Server by Simon Collin

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

256Kbps Internet connection is hardly enough to run a web hosting company. You can probably host your own website, or for another 2 people, but not much more before you lose performance. You also need more than one server for redundancy, in case one server fails and needs to be restarted. The SOP usually, you let one server up while another one runs backup.

Then set up a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) to set up your web server. Install a web server program, like Apache (http://httpd.apache.org/) and away you go.

That's just the brief outline, the whole process is more involved (and with some tinkering with hardware). There are some tutorials out there you can read, I'll put up some links if I can find one that's good.

It's a lot of work and not worth it, for you. Setting up a web server is just the beginning, then you have to setup a DNS server, maybe a mail server, backup server, and you need replication services, and failovers, and need to buy IP addresses, and much more.

it's not going to happen with a 256 upload speed and one computer.

you can do it for fun for yourself and some of your friends but nobody is going to pay you a penny for horrible service since you dont know what you're doing especially when they can get FREE service from places like doteasy.com who have 24x7 support and clustered servers.

if you want to study something, start with apache.org

- Install Web server software (Apache, or Microsoft Internet Information Server, or other); At this point your computer already works as Web server.
- Install additional software which may need to your customers (typically PHP and MySQL);
- Install some kind of user control panel software (typically a PHP-based script), so that your customers can control something in their accounts.
- Learn how to fight against hacker attacks;
- Contact your Internet connection provider on how to get advanced services such as domain parking (your customers will want to have their domain names to be hosted at your server);
- Promote your service.
