i know the whole thing about how each line is a string and the number is the number of the fret you play it in!! im saying, what happens when there are a few numbers in the same place!! like, for instance:

Tablature, (also called guitar tabs or simply tab, and even tabulature) is a six-line staff that represents the guitar fingerboard. The top line of the tab indicates the first string of the guitar (the highest sounding E). A number on the appropriate line indicates the string and fret of any note. This simplifies guitar transcriptions.

A guitar tab is a visual representation of your guitar fret board. The lowest line is your Bass E String while the Top is the higher E string.
Combining the musical notation for timing - the time signature, whole note, quarter notes, etc - you now have the tune and timing to make music.

Each break in dashes is the next fret (the portion seperated by the thick bar across the guitar fretboard) So, the stars represent where the fingers go and the last E is the fattest string. So, if you put your pinkie where the star is on the G string, your ring finger where the D is and the middle finger where the A string is, you will have the note Em (e minor)

EDIT...WHAT YOU'RE REFERRING TO IS CALLED BAR CHORDS..YOU JUST HAVE TO TAKE YOUR WHOLE FINGER AND SMASH IT AGAINST ALL THE STRINGS IT SAYS TO ON USING YOUR THUMB TO CLAMP DOWN...

Tablature is great in that it gives you exact finger positioning on the fretboard. Unfortunately, it isn't specific enough to give the note duration, and form of attack as in progressive volume or the absence of volume as can be shown in music notation.
Playing tablature, however, is a great way to learn the fretboard from position 1 all the way to position 22.

its very simple.each line represents a string of the guitar.the top line represents the bottom string on the guitar and the bottom line represents the top string on the guitar.then the numbers on them represent the fret to be played.

guitar tabs are cool if you are just learning. but keep in mind that sometimes they are wrong. depending on the guy or gal who is transcribing the song. i have two subscriptions to guitar mags and some of them are wrong. wrong in the way they interpet them. if you watch the videos, watch were the guitarst hand is fretted. also, try listening to a song and mimic the cords they are playing. like play a piece of a song and pause it. guitar is a way to express your feelings deep inside and let them all out. Dime was quoted saying he didnt learn scales and tab he just listend to his favorite music and tried hard to find the notes because he wanted to play that bad. he felt it inside himself. he was one of the greatest guitarest of all time. R.I.P.

where there is more than 1 number in a place, it means that it is a chord and those notes r played simutaneously

each horizontal line represents a string of the guitar:
e---------------------------------------------------
b---------------------------------------------------
g---------------------------------------------------
d-----------4---------------------------------------

and each number represents the fret u should hold down while playing that string.
Easy!
If there is more than one string to be held down at a time, e.g.
g------------
d---2-------
a---2-------
e---2-------
u should cover all the strings necessary with 1 finger and strum them all simultaneously
if its like
g-------------
d--4----------
a--4----------
e--2----------
then u'll need to use ur first and second fingers to cover all the frets before strumming
