I have heard complaints that the US looks weak to other countries when people who oppose the president speak up and voice their opposition. How do you know it makes us look weak unless you are from another country? If there is anyone answering this question from a foreign country, please tell us how the US looks weak to the world. Republicans and Democrats: No party bashing, please! Honest answers from foreigners are appreciated.

Well, I don't think I've had any foreigners yet, but good answers from Americans so far. Except Texas1970...he had to go down the party bashing road. That was not the purpose of this question. By the way, I think we had a little more respect during the Clinton years because he knew how to talk diplomatically. Bush hasn't done that yet. Wanting peace makes Clinton weak? No, it makes him smart.

I think dissent makes the US look like an open, democratic society where individuals are not forced to agree with the actions of their government. Thank goodness we're starting to turn around the trend of the voices of reason being suppressed.
I don't think being a bunch of goosestepping robots implies "strength".

I think you have it back to front. It's the lack of true political opposition that's the problem. The 'weakness' you talk of is that of people sitting back and letting a government do what the fcuk it wants.
You have only 2 main political parties - that can't be good.
Opposition and political diversity is what you need MORE of, not less of. THEN you may have a chance of being the 'free' nation that you always speak of.
Please don't take this as an Anti US bashing, it's not meant to be there's enough of that around already. I may not like the country politically, but you can't help but love the people that live there.

I am an American and proud of it. I couldn't stand Clinton and don't like Bush much better, however when abroad I let people know where I stand, regardless of the stance of leadership. Most people can't believe we are allowed to disagree and are shocked when I do. I have repeatedly informed them that whatever stance I have versus the President is of no consequence, because whatever the problem he is still the leader of my country and I always stand with my country, whether I like it or not. Most of these people have a hard time grasping these ideals however, no matter how much i explain the our governement and country.

Just wanted to point out the irony in the fact that the Americans who make those complaints are the same ones eager to tell us that we shouldn't care what the rest of the world thinks when we make decisions about things like national security or the death penalty.

I know you're looking for foreigners, but I wanted to chime in and say that I don't much care if we "look weak" to the rest of the world because of our internal dissent. Anyone who doubts our tenacity or our ability to protect our national interest is in for a big surprise, especially with this President in charge. Like him or hate him, no one can say he is not decisive.

i'm an atheist yet do no longer agree that one hundred% atheism will make the international non violent. there is idiotic atheists AND idiotic non secular human beings. asserting that, it style of feels to me an adverse lot of people have died or harm others interior the call of religion, so it may certainly be greater non violent than that's solid now, even though it does not be one hundred% non violent as there is lots of alternative crap occurring. It does not be too plenty diverse, in basic terms a tad quieter.

NOT ME - dissent shows the POWER of America. So few countries in the world have such an open process. George W will soon be gone and hopefully an even more open government will take his place (if there is a less open government I will be very worried....)

Not at all, intelligent political discussions can only help. It is called democracy. If we could vote here to get rid of all the hate -filled posts I think we would win hands down. Then we could discuss all issues regardless of your political believes or part affiliations. Dissent isn't bad it's healthy and we won't become robotic, myopic followers of any one party.

As I just said in another post we may fight each other like a red headed step sister but will defend each other against any outside force! If they think we are weak well they could be in for a real shock.

No, it actually makes us stronger in the eyes of most of the world. Only the neo-cons would have you believe otherwise.
Why do you think that people are breaking down our borders trying to get here?
