My dad was just telling me about an old friend who he said never cried, had no conscience, looked for fights and shot a dog in the head, the friend decided he really wanted to join the army and was never seen again.

why do people honour soldiers? is it because you feel you owe your liberty to them ?

Historically liberty has been established by those who were not soldiers. Soldiers mostly follow orders, they have "a job to do" regardless of whether they are rescuing civilians or killing them.

Where people see courage and goodness in soldiers isnt there also emotional sickness and a murderous impulse?

What sort of person volunteers to devote their life to the skills of destruction and the business of hunting, trapping and slaughtering humans???

Australian soldiers recently took part in the invasion of Iraq, which involved the killing of more than 100,000 civilians, and lost not one soldier in the process, it feels strange and shameful to be commemorating them?

Hello Kate!
Your questions are serious and good!
Rally, the nature of man, for millions of years has been to be the fighter, hunter, sailor! Thus, the clever ones led those masses into fights and who is gaining? Of course the leaders! The rest are just suffering, if they are lucky! If they are luckier, they die soon!
Now, we think we are civilized, but many agree with the killing of innocent, children, women, peaceful people! How long is this happening? Many centuries! There are always leaders and rulers who want to take over the property of as many as they can! Look at the crusades, European, Asian, American history! History has become the record of the murderers!
Whoever agrees with killing unprotected children, in Asia, Africa, America, Europe, Australia, dear Kate should answer why are they so brutal, barbarian, inhumane?
This is a game for the rulers, they hide that way and the people are been slaughtered, suffer, loose their loved ones and still, there are individuals who support these actions!
What I am sorry is that the our own rulers are stealing money and power from us (through taxes, laws, regulations, etc.) and they support these killings! Thus, indirectly we are partaking and become murderers since we do not stop this on our state level!
Unfortunately we let everything to Hope and thus the rulers continue their game on our backs!

Yes, there is unfortunately at times killing involved in war. I wish it weren't so, but that's the reality. I would also remind you though that soldiers do a lot more than that. Just recently, they were a God-send in the latest evacuations in the Middle East along with other humanitarian missions.

I don't know.Your Q has many Q's in it...Uniforms are sexy on men to women, gererally, until this is killed in the admirer. Was your dad's friend a molestation victium, the dead emptyness implies this.So if you were called to defend your country...You would claim "Contientious Objector" status & not go? ok, people do this.Supposedly Soldiers are sacrificing their lives for the security of freedom & the preservation of all the good that is (if you can find any anymore)& it has been established by thoes who we have voted in to make these decisions that this freedom is in jeopardy some how some way. I think this is why people honor soldiers.

Supporting soldiers in general is right. Without them, we wouldn't have the freedoms we now enjoy.

However, you should not honor soldiers that murder, torture, etc. even if they were told to do so by higher ups.

Also, supporting our troops does not by default mean supporting the person sending them to their deaths, or the war they are fighting.

Your "question" made me want to puke. If you're an American, you owe you're freedom to make worthless comments to our soldiers. American and allied soldiers saved the world from fascism not so long ago. To say they had an "emotional sickness" is beyond the pale.

Soldiers lay their lives on the line for scum like you. Freedom is not free. You can say the stupid things you say because of a soldier.
