Since Sociology is the study of how society and people affect one another, I would say people need to be families again. We need 2 parents in the home or at least 2 that get along. We need people to stop sleeping together that only like each other for 5 minutes and having children they can't get along long enough to raise. When kids come from an unstable background, they are going to turn out bad most of the time. There are exceptions, but they are getting fewer and far between.

I don't know that there's a "right" answer to this, but what I'd like to see is more locally-based food production. Local food:

- supports your local enconomy

- often supports smaller farms

- gets the food to you sooner (and fresher)

- supports greater biodiversity (since breeds grown outside the big production regions like California has to be selected for local conditions)

- saves a lot of oil (since it doesn't have to be shipped thousands of miles, locally-grown petroleum-fertilized produce actually uses less oil than long-distance organic)

- often tastes better (since it's fresher, more likely to be in season, and the breed has been selected for taste, not for being able to stand up to a week in a train car)

- can help build community between the farmer and the consumer (at least when bought through farmer's markets, farmstands, or community-supported agriculture)

- is less vulnerable to disasters, bioterrorism, etc. (i.e, if there's a big quake and California falls into the ocean, the supermarket isn't getting it's broccoli, but the farmer's market will!)

Education. We need to make public education much better for all students so that our youth can compete with other nations. For more info, watch Oprah today. There's a special on it.
