In my family, my father and sister have prescriptions, while my mother and I do not. So far, my mother and I are far healthier than my dad and sister while their conditions progressively get worse.

Does medicine really help in the long run?

My sister has "mental balance" prescriptions, which have caused her a seizure in the past, but not enough proof was available. She really needs councilling.

My dad only has a heart condition that makes it beat out of rhythm, but as time progresses, the doctors keep telling him to take more a more a day which makes his overall health condition worse and more stressful.

It depends on the condition and the medication. Some conditions are helped by medicine...like a bacterial infection. Some medicine just makes them more tollerable as they progress. I take muscle relaxers and pain meds for a bad back injury if I didnt take them I wouldnt be able to stand up straight. They dont help fix my back, but they do not make it worse. They just make it so I can function. Some people need to be on meds to prolong thier lives...think aids patients the meds dont fix the problem they slow it down ...so while these folks are still taking the meds the situation is getting worse but they wouldve died 5 years earlier if it wernt for the medications.

In response to your additional comments.....Dr.s will usually perscribe a medication if they think the outcome is more favorable then the risks. If your dads heart could miss a few beats too many and the meds save him from a massive MI then the risk is worth it to the Dr.s to save your dads life.
As far as your sis... anyone taking antidepressents or "mood" drugs should be in counseling in conjunction with the meds...My personal opinion. Simply because of the risks associated with those types os drugs. But a regular Dr. may only suggest this it would be up to your sister to take that step.

I suppose it probably depends on what you are suffering from. If I do not take my allergy and asthma medicines, there is a good chance that I would die. So yes, in my case, medications not only work, they are crucial.
