Where do they come from!! thinks like "off the wagon", working like a dog" etc etc ...interesting discussion for a lunchtime!

It means that somethng is so unlikely to happen that to even just get a small chance for it to happen would be an amazing thing

e.g. If I say I am going to win the lottery, someone might reply, chance would be a fine thing

Off the wagon was origionally to do with a marraage ceremony where the bride was taken around the village on the back of a wagon giving out beer from a barrell (i saw it a program about it on tv). Or about a water wagon (see source link)

such expressions are usually from colloquial english. sometimes its slang, sometimes its a phrase that just catches the publics imagination
