Two reasons: the average American doesn't know any better and doesn't care. Since US (and the world, for that matter) has a pathetic science IQ, the news does not have to try when it comes to science, and the people are not knowledgeable enough to check or care. It's really sad, and it starts in school. Most students have 3x required humanities than science classes, which should be criminal.

Don't you know? The media control everything in our society. If they say math and science are fact then the vast majority of non-thinking Americans will believe them like the good programmed robots they are.

I don't really understand the question... At least what it's supposed to be referring to.
As for why they are not taken to task - who would do that, except them media themselves? Or more correctly, who in the media would give those of us that would take them to task a public forum to do so?
