I know for example that google's symbol is "goog", but I don't know if that's the symbol of a common of preffered stock! How can I find the symbpls of preffered stocks?

A preferred stock has 'pf' after the stock symbol. some times 'pf' plus an 'a' or 'b' etc... if they have more than one preferred stock

Good question! Dealing with preferred stocks is a pain, & you should be prepared to spend some serious time before buying any. Why is it such a pain? I'm not sure, except that far fewer people buy them compared to common stocks. Also, they all pay higher dividends & thus buying and selling should be factored like quasi-bonds.

Preferred's I own and list on Yahoo have the following tickers:
JPT MSJ KRB-PE PRE-PD GOM

So somtimes they are hyphenated & sometimes not.

Every different web site seems to use different tickers for the same preferred stock! By all means, use the "symbol lookup" feature of your web site.
