Yes I believe capital punishment should be brought back. It cost millions of pounds to keep very dangerous prisoners in jail and that money could be put to far better uses. If murderers, rapists and terrorist do not want to be executed in shame they should not commit the crime. It may be that in order to try to safeguard against an innocent person being convicted, all witnesses and people of authority concerned in the prosecution should have to undergo a lie detector test to ensure the evidence they have given is the truth.

Many, many times in the past a dangerous offender has escaped or been given their freedom (as being no longer dangerous) only to re-offend and some innocent person ends up dead.

No. In the UK we have advanced socially and intellectually beyond the point where capital punishment is either effective or desirable. As countries reach civilized maturity they reject capital punishment and rely on more intelligent social pressure and remedies to provide justice and rehabilitation where possible.

If rehabilitation is not possible such countries have realised that the barbaric practise of capital punishment only leads to a more violent society where violence is viewed as an acceptable part of everyday life. In intelligent society capital punishment is viewed as legitimising the very crimes for which some are being punished for thus making such crimes acceptable by some members of society in some circumstances rather than acting as a deterrent.

Countries that still employ capital punishment are those that have not reached that level of civilisation or social stability and maturity to cope with a more intelligent approach to justice.

No NO NO NO!!!! I could attatch the essay i wrote against capital punnishment but it is in Gaelic so might be difficult to understand.
Here are a few of the reasons why not:

Killing somebody is not an effective form of punishment as they are dead after it. just doesnt make sense.

The real punishment goes to the family and friends of the executed person. Anybody ever think about them?

If you say murder is wrong, you cant kill a murderer without being wrong yourself. Just think about it properly and dont be so quick to judge.

I used to think not, but as I've got older I've changed my mind and agree with it under certain circumstances:

* For murder in which there was a clear, pre-planned attempt without provocation (eg: not in the case of domestic violence)
* For the most aggressive forms of rape
* For rape or sexual assault on a child
* For acts of terrorism in which the case is clear and proven
* Where there is no possibility of rehabilitation

Obviously there needs to be overwhelming evidence in favour of the prosecution and DNA evidence would have to be conclusive.

At the moment the justice system in this country is an absolute joke with murders and rapists serving terribly short sentences that do not reflect the crime. What about the case where that man raped a baby and only got 5 years? That was appalling. In my opinion, people like that aren't worth keeping alive - they're going to cost decent people millions of pounds and will never contribute anything to society!

No. It serves no purpose. Imprisonment and loss of freedom for an individual's entire life is sufficient punishment (there is no parole if you are convicted of murder in this state). In the 1800's the State of Michigan hung an innocent man. Because of the shame and guilt felt by the people in this state, the death penalty was immediately abolished. We have not supported it since (although there have been horrible crimes when you really believe a criminal has clearly overstayed their welcome on planet earth). Research has proven that the death penalty does not serve as a deterrent to crime, and that those who are executed are usually poor (couldn't hire a good lawyer), uneducated, and often not guilty.

No way. Quite apart from it being barbaric, would you trust the judicial system in this country enough to get it right, and not kill innocent people?

I wouldn't. Capital punishment does not address the root of the problems in our culture which turn out murderers and paedophiles.

However, the whole of our judicial system requires a complete overhaul. It's ridiculous.

yes for several reasons:
1.) no more over crowded jails
2.) we now have that much scientific proof that a particular person commited the crime there should be no more errors in hanging the wrong person.
3.) It is a waste of taxpayers money to keep alive murdering scum.
4.) It will stop do-gooders campaigning for their release because they are sorry now.
5.) it will provide a harsher deterrant.

ABSOLUTELY. And not only the UK.

I think it's giving rapists, murderers and drugs dealers a bad signal that they can act as they do and in the worst case are locked up in jail.

Why do so many people in western countries think it's humane to be weak against criminals ? They are not at all considerate to their victims.

Yes 100%!! I also advocate the use of fire arms by the police!! The police are unable to enforce the laws of this country properly because of lack of respect, we need more deterrents such as the death penalty etc.
