Your friend does not understand Democracy. Democracy goes hand-in-hand with Freedom. You have the right to believe what you want, you have the right to live without fear of being harmed for your beliefs. It doesn't mean you won't be ridiculed or challenged in your beliefs, or that life will be easy for you, but you have those rights.
I would wager that your friend comes from a background where he or she is fed only the information that the ruling class want him or her to know. That he or she comes from an intollerant area of the world, and that he or she has never experienced real Democracy.
So, try this experiment.. get your friends together (10 or more works well for this) to go for a movie or do some other activity. Appoint one of you as the leader. Take a vote as to what you are going to do, don't tell the Leader the result so he is not influenced. Then have that Leader decide what to do. See how you feel about that decision. Then tell the leader what you all would like to do, and see if he changes is mind. That is Democracy in action. You have the right to choose your leader, you have the right to voice your opinion, you have the right to choose another leader (without violence) if your leader fails to act in the best interest of those he follows.
Your friend is wrong.
Choose your own path, listen to logic, reason, science, math, and other hard evidence. Don't blindly follow, just because someone says this is the way it is or this is the way it has always been. Don't be afraid to ask "Why?"
Like my father always said, be a leader, not a follower. But, being a leader, means persuading people to do what you want them to do, not bossing them around. Those being led, must believe in their leader, and follow willingly.

Your truth might just be a lie. Do you know for sure what the truth is? Granted a Democracy isn't perfect, but if the one who rules is living a lie then what is the difference? The truth is said to be consistent, but that is a lie. The truth depends on the times. It was thought that the world was flat That was the truth at that time. We know believe the world is round. If your truth doesn't infringe on others then no harm. Be careful with the truth. It can be a dangerous weapon.

Nooo never never try and live a life that is false. You would end up feeling very empty and cheated. Believe me I've tried it before. People not wanting to be different can be because of many reasons. But I don't see what democracy has to do with reality. It's not about people voting what's true and what's false it just a system/form of government...And yes you should search for the utmost truth and when you have found it please share it with me
cheers

Just because it's majority does not mean it's right. follow your heart, but protect yourself. Corruption and lies exist at all levels of society. That is because we are human. There are good people and bad people. Individuality is not bad in all ways. Yeah, we want to be original, maybe do something that never has been done before...like invent the wheel, or television, or something like that. That is a positive example of individuality. A negative example might be Adolph Hitler. He's an individual, but a bad example of one.
Bottom line, be yourself. Be true to yourself, you cannot count on truth from everyone. Leaders lie, even moms lie...know who you are and you'll be alright.

Democracy usually has to do with questions of good & wrong, rather than correct & false, but in a way you're right.
And no, you shouldn't deny your own opinion or believe when the majority disagrees with it. Personally, I always choose the side of the underdog and love to play the devil's advocate, going against the opinion of the majority. If the majority turns left, I'd rather turn right. It's not the easiest way to live life, but I'd prefer that over the compromise of my principles, opinions and beliefs.
My life motto is a quote from the song Englishman in New York by Sting: "Be Yourself No Matter What They Say"

Try to live as anybody else, get a friend or professional help to analyze your life style, you will see that you still are different from the world you call "all the same".
If you have problems with "politics, laws, democracy, the system",
i believe your not the only one. Lucky thing; after a few years you get used to things and more important things might take over your interest in this matter.

The time that we live being different is something good.
I believe that most of the people are getting crazy, most of the people think that have very serious problems(that aren't usually so serious),most of the people like Britney Spears ,most of the people think that human relationships vanish and most of the people believe that the only think that really counts is having a lot of money!
If you are different and don't believe all things above I Think that you are a healthy and normal person even If you are the last one on this planet.

Be different! Individuality is unique. Democracy has its negative and positive points. Like everything else, nothings perfect. If you only try to live like everyone else, how would people know the good or the bad side of life and challenge would cease to exist as we know it if there are no differences at all among people.

If we left the governing completely up to popular vote, woman still wouldn't vote, Blacks would be segregated (more than they are now actually), slavery would have ended years and years later. Also right now Gays aren't allowed to marry because of it. Sometimes the popular vote isn't the RIGHT thing, and someone with the courage to know what is best for the future needs to stand up for that.

You certainly shouldn't go along with others opinions if you don't agree. If somebody said let's jump off the Mississippi bridge and die would you agree? Don't be afraid to be different. Choose your battles, Also remember a washing machine wouldn't clean clothes if there wasn't an agitator. Understand?
