The chicken or the egg is a reference to the causality dilemma which arises from the expression "which came first, the chicken or the egg?". When used in reference to difficult problems, a chicken and egg problem is similar to a Catch 22 situation where something cannot happen until a second thing does, and the second thing cannot happen until the first does. For example, a person might have trouble finding a job without work experience, but to get work experience he/she must get a job.

The chicken because if it were the egg somebody might have eaten it before it became a chicken but then maybe somebody would have eaten the chicken before it had the chance to lay an egg, hmmm, it is an age old question for a reason. But I don't think there could be and egg without a chicken to lay it and incubate it so I would still say the chicken came first.

The egg, actually some 'smart' people with too much time on their hands figured this one out only recently.
Since there was a 'first chicken' ie the first chicken creature ever, then it was embryonic in an egg, therefore; the egg came first

I'd go with the egg...

Even though the nowaday chicken is needed to lay an egg, you'll have to take as well a look at science and biology. All life started from cells with genetic information. Since an egg is actually nothing else than that, a calcium containing shell with genetic information in it, this idea is close to me.

Procreation has taken many forms, as eggs, external in the beginning with many living species, but also internal in creation,as with the warm blooded mammal, who incubate their young inside their bodies, while animals, who rely on eggs, use either their own body temperatures to incubate them (the brooding hen), while others use the sunlight as incubator (the burried eggs of fish, toads, snakes and turtles, to name a few).

So, since things have evolved, I go with the idea that the cell, or the egg, came first.

The egg. Eggs have been around for millions of years before the chicken finally evolved.

Chicken, god made the chicken first. Then then the chicken laid the egg and we got even more chicken for us to eat.
