If your referring to the mainstream bollywood flicks, they are made for the Indian audiences within India and abroad and will not really appeal to those who do not have the cultural background.
However, there is this whole new set of "multiplex" films which are targeted towards a more international audience and they IMO are really of very high quality as far as story, acting and direction go. They are winning awards at several film festivals the world over.
Here are a few of my favorites that would fit into this 'world class' category-have included links to reviews and the official sites-
1. Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi (2003)
Tagline: A clash between idealism and realism
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411469/...
Sudhir Mishra's Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi reflects the intensity and fate of three young characters, who start out on the same platform but board different trains and reach a destination of their own making. Stunningly beautiful Geeta Rao has two admirers - one is Siddharth Tyabji and the other is Vikram Malhotra circa 1969 West Bengal that is witnessing it's struggle against the ruling Congress party, joining forces with left-wing Marxist and Communist parties. While Siddharth is directly involved in this struggle, Geeta and Vikram are romantically involved.

2. Being Cyrus (2005) by Homi Adajania
Tagline: Who you let in can change your life
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0412308/...
Being Cyrus tells the story of the Sethnas, an estranged family of Parsis. A once acclaimed sculptor, Dinshaw (Naseeruddin Shah) lives a reclusive life with his alluring but bored wife Katy (Dimple Kapadia). Meanwhile, Dinshaw's brother Farokh (Boman Irani) and sister-in-law Tina (Simone Singh) are charged with the unhappy responsibility of caring for Fardoonjee (Honey Chhaya), the decrepit father of the Sethna clan. However with the arrival of the seemingly amiable Cyrus (Saif Ali Khan), we discover that no one is really quite what they seem.

3. Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara (2005) by Jahnu Barua
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0454504/
An old man stands at the feet of the vast sea. A loving daughter searches for answers in the magnanimity of its waves. A story unfolds through the confines of a cosy house.
The empty dining table waits to serve its inhabitants. A tall ladder that has seen various ups and downs. Open windows, flying curtains -- mute spectators to the increasing problems of a once happy family. This is Uttam Chaudhry's (played by Anupam Kher) home. An acclaimed scholar of Hindi and now a retired professor, Chaudhry is a man of principles and values. He believes in the strength of courage and striving for success. You can sense his integrity when he fondly renders the lines of his favourite poem -- Himmat karne walon ki har nahi hoti (Those who try never lose).

4. Maqbool (2003) by Vishal Bharadwaj
Macbeth meets Godfather meets Mumbai Underworld
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379370/
The backdrop for ‘Maqbool’ is provided in the Mafia of the city of Mumbai. The central character of the story is, as the name suggests, a man by the name of Maqbool. He is the right hand man of the Mafia Don Abbaji, who has been ruling the crime world since quite a long time. Nimmi is Abbaji’s mistress who hates her situation and is in love with Maqbool who she perceives, is the only one who can put her out of her misery.

5. Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002) by Aparna Sen
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0329393/
Director Aparna Sen paints a tender love story to intensify the horror of intolerance. A busload of passengers creates a mini India with diverse languages, creeds and cultures. The leitmotif of their journey from hills to the plains has the camera (handled adroitly by Goutam Ghose) studying collective and individual human behaviour — in routine interaction and in emergencies. The fine balance spotlights the individual's crisis without blurring the communitarian context.

6. Rang De Basanti (2006)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405508/
It tells the story of an English filmmaker who travels to the sub-continent to make a documentary about the freedom fighters mentioned in her grandfather's memoirs. An entertaining mix of romance, history and social commentary, this quality production takes Hindi cinema in a fresh direction.

7. Bollywood Calling (2001) by Nagesh Kukunoor
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303733/
An ageing Indian superstar, a veteran of 30-40 'dacoit' films, fires his director and vows to ghost direct the 41st caper that will not only be 'different' but also a 'super-duper' hit. The producer, the son of a makeup man, and the assistant director of 71 films dreams of mounting the biggest production that Hyderabad city has seen. Caught between the two, in a typical Hindi masala movie setup, is an out-of-work Hollywood actor whose insistence on a bound script and coherency makes him look like a fool.

8. Water (2005) by Deepa Mehta
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0240200/
Set in the 1930s during the rise of the independence struggles against British colonial rule, the film examines the plight of a group of widows forced into poverty at a temple in the holy city of Varanasi. It focuses on a relationship between one of the widows, who wants to escape the social restrictions imposed on widows, and a man who is from a lower caste and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi.

10. Raghu Romeo (2003) by Rajat Kapoor
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377131/
Raghu Romeo is about a man who takes television too seriously. The 30 year old waiter lives with his widowed mother in a ramshackle lower middle class tenemant. A dancer, Sweety, is in love with Raghu and a gangster Anna is in love with Sweety. One shining light inspires Raghu to coast through his humdrum existence with a semblance of equanimity - the ideal woman Neeta who unfortunately is not a real person but a character in the long running all time hit soap opera, Dard. Reshma, the actress who plays Neeta, is hardly like the character she portrays. What happens when reality collides with fantasy? A madcap adventure that ends with Raghu finally growing up.

First of all, bollywood is NOT Indian version of hollywood.
Its just rhymes with the name.
Second, bollywood movies r not made for audience like u. U got know the Indian culture to appreciate these movies.
Third, there r many crossover movies r made in bollywood now. Try watching, Lagan, Rang de basanti, Hazaro khwahishe aisi etc
Last but not the least, if these movies r stupid, then why do watch them ??

A hollywood movie is made from the point of view of the western audience. Hence they do well. Indian filmmakers try their best to adapt but as a result lose the essence of cinema during the transition.
Hence the movies which actually do well are those which are made for an Indian audience.

I disagree. I love bollywood. it takes you away from your
everyday gangs, violence and sh*t!!
2ndly if you don't like it don't watch it. As the others said, its
a cultural thing. I am not Indian, but appreciate the break/difference from western world which is being rubbed in
our faces everyday...
we need a bit of love in our lives ...
FYI - it does not always have sad endings....

I guess they're not as sophisticated as our own Hollywood. Maybe their producers can actually come up with an original idea instead of remaking a movie for the fifth time.
