Is it advisable to use special "hosts" file? I have read various conflicting arguments on various websites in favour & against using such special files.Should I use the default "hosts" file (in Win.XP Pro. SP2) or any special "hosts" file? Please guide!!
Thanks in advance

A host file is simple a file that associates host names with IP addresses. Windows can look at the file to get information on a PC and how to find it rather than having to do a DNS lookup. Host files are faster than DNS.

However, if the IP address of whatever you are looking for changes, DNS will be updated and your host file will not, so you will lose the ability to connect to that object.

I might use host files for some devices where I have control over the device's IP address. That way it can only change if I change it. I would not use a host file for a device or which I do not have control. The device could change and I would be unable to access it. I would let DNS handle those devices.

Personally, I only use a host file when DNS does not work.

Hope that explains it to you.
