most current dyes are synthetic because plant based dyes fade quickly if you wash them.

pH indicator is read cabbage. tomatoes etc. pick up heavy metals (Pb, Hg) easily and store them in their fruit.

for the rest i'm gonna leave you to do your own homework. look up metallothyins (sp?)

Currently plants are rarely used to extract dyestuffs. Nearly all dyes are now synthetically produced. Plants are generally boiled with water or alcohol to extract the colours required.
