If so, what all was there to do?

I've been there 5 times or so on work, a few days at a time. It is a cute (by Alaskan standards) town perched on the edge of the mountains along the shore. Most people get there by cruise ship, but Alaska Airlines goes there on their "milkrun" flight up through the SE AK towns.

(Call ahead and) Grab a water taxi at the airport (rather than the ferry) to get to your hotel. You'll see the waterfront from the water. There are flightseeing companies if you want to see the broader area. Taquan and Promech are the biggest companies doing it. But I like http://www.islandwings.com/ better. Michelle Masden is a 9,000 hour pilot, very safe, with the nicest Beaver on floats I've ever seen. I had a fight with Taquan where my client and I had to tell the pilot to turn around - he didn't seem to know FAA minimum flight conditions - not bending the regs, but totally ignoring the requirements.

Stop by the USFS admin building for trail/cabin info. Or web search on them in advance.

When the salmon are running, you can fish right from town in a couple of places. Ask a local for a location and a tackle shop about licenses and regs.

There's the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center (50 Main Street).

You can charter a fishing trip with lots of outfits there. Go for salmon and/or halibut in the salt water.

There are some art galleries in town, a couple of pretty decent restaurants.

Hope that helps.

I live in Alaska but have never been to Ketchikan. From what I hear there is not much to do there.

There are a lot of little shops. You can catch the ferry and travel a little. There are a lot of old churches to visit. There are bars there. It is a beautiful little town. (this info is from a relative of mine).

I made a stop there on a cruise. I remember there being the usual touristy type shops downtown if your into shopping. Also,
there were things like fishing and wildlife viewing excursions. Maybe you'll get some feedback from someone who's actually lived there.
