I am not very competent at picking up on women's signals. If I see something that is even vaguely possible I put it down to bad coincidence.
An example, a girl I saw on the train a few weeks back. We glanced at each other no less than six times but I couldn't bring myself to smile. She didn't smile either.
Please provide information on what to look for, and how to actually spot the signal?
Also, whats the best way of acknowledging a woman whose eyes meet mine from a distance, say a couple of seats away. there's no real way of sensing interest level, so what should I do in that situation?

Smile!!!!!!! You've got to smile or she wont' even know you are interested and probably won't even give you a second thought when she steps off that train!!

It is very likely she is just being kind and friendly. That her friend is not attractive (to you) does not mean anything, maybe she is a really nice person, they have lots of things in common etc. We don't all pick our friends on their looks. Take things slowly, build up a friendship, find out what she likes doing and suggest taking her somewhere as thanks for all her help. The more time you spend with her the clearer it will become if she just sees you as a friend or possibly something more.
