The force of friction acts opposite to the dir of motion or tendency of motion.Hence force f acts due west. But the magnitude of force cannot be found.

If it is accelerating due north, then the _sum_ of the external forces upon it is one newton due north. The external force f is greater than one newton because it has to oppose the friction of the block as it moves over a rough surface, but we don't know how much greater because the coefficient of friction is not specified.
