We grew tomatoes in containers while we lived in Vegas and they did well. Not as well as they do elsewhere in the ground though. Also herbs and perennials did well also.
Since water and heat are your enemies there, you need to consider:
1)Putting down good soil
2)Before planting, lay down a good drip irrigation. The most simple ones are often the best. Spraying the garden often distributes the bad bugs, drip systems from the bottom up go where the water is needed.
3)Build a small, tarplike covering for most of the garden to "shade" the plantings. This will also help growth as the nights cool in November.
4)Find a local nursery (not Lowe's type) and discuss plantings for this time of year. You could probably still do squash, lettuce, melons, etc.
5)Your growing season is extremely long so you may want to start small this year and spend less to see what works.
Good luck
P.S. I miss the weather there.
