that doesn't answer your question? In other words, if I ask, "what member of the Beatles is your favorite", without a doubt, somebody will answer with "I love music", and that's all they write. It makes me wonder if they just say anything, just to get points.

well theres 2 possible reasons for that....1 because they didnt read your question and/or they are a bit 'slow' or 2 because they got really obsessed with this point thing on yahoo answers ..which is pretty pathetic to fish for points like that really.

There should be a better way to award points; people shouldn't get 2 points just for posting nonsense in response to a question.
I think that whomever posted the question should be allowed to award the points who the respondees. Likewise, I think people should get points subtracted for inane questions and inappropriate ones. There are a lot of people here who ask stupid questions and many more who post stupid responses.
What irks me even more is that posters award 10 points for answers that are wrong, or without sources - if the question demands fact instead of opinion, and people who take the time to genuinely answer a question and back it up with links and sources don't receive the credit they deserve.

You may be right. But it's my own personal experience that I just plain ole get the question wrong. Someone asked about Hallowe'en, and I wrote about the holiday and never realized they were asking about the movie! It was even in the movie category, too! Duh!
I don't think I have a favourite Beatle. I think it'd be either John or Paul, though. It's a tough call!

Something! (2 points for that) I answered a question about the Beatles, but I don't remember if it was yours or not. But, if I didn't, my answer is PAUL.
Now to answer your question. The only thing I can think of is why people don't answer is because they may not know the answer.
Just a wild guess.

I think they are actually trying to improve their ability to spell. For some it's hard to answer a question and spell correctly at the same time.
Take me for example, my spelling is pretty OK but I can't figure out the answer to this question.

I know! I hate that too. I think they're just trying to be idiots in going the cheap way to get points.
and I know you were just giving an example, but I love Sir Paul. :D

Brace yourself for a lot of sarcasm with this one...
But to answer your question, most people are in it just for the points.
