Something out of the ordinary, off the wall, but not offensive.

i.e. focus on intelligence or other characteristics, be funny, be sweet, not perverted

Example: I hate pickup lines. I'd much rather have a guy who is my friend first, gets to know me, and then compliments me. In my yearbook, there are about a dozen messages that say the same thing. The special ones are from my best guy friends, which related our adventures together.

Basically, any decent compliment said with sincerity and eye contact is great.

Reading Shakespeare or announcing things over the radio are cool. My friend had a guy send a shout-out to her on the radio, he has a radio program. Singing "You're too good to be true" a la Heath Ledger in "10 Things I Hate About You" is also fabulous. Karaoke and love letters are great.

Getting down to the fiber of the compliment, it depends on the woman. Everyone is an individul. Think about compliments you've received and why they mattered. Sorry this isn't a short answer ;D

"said"?? Do you mean sad? Almost any compliment would flatter me as long as it was sweet and not too pushy. You got to make it sound like you mean it, not like you're trying to get into the girl's pants.

something that actually flattered me was 'i have no one else to talk to, and i was feeling lonely, that is why i called you' , and 'there is no one sophisticated around me to talk to (that is why i am talking to you', and 'i like your voice'.
