That little piece of plastic is known as a wax comb. You use it to get grip from old wax on your surfboard. All the big label surf brands put them with there boardies. They very handy if you run out of wax or need to gain more traction :0)

When I bought some Roxy boardshorts, there was also a plastic "thing" in the back pocket with a string attached. I asked some people, and they said that it was for surfing. Like some kind of use for your surfboard. Kind of pointless for me because I don't surf, but maybe it'll help you. =)

If it looks like a hair comb, then its a sufboard wax scrapper! No seriously!!

When surfers wipe out sometimes, sand gets stuck to the wax on their board, so the clever people who make the board shorts pants decided to put a comb in the back pocket to appeal to the surfing market!

I know exactly what you are on abt as I have them on my swim shorts. It is a tool for surfers. If you get stuck in the waves and you can't get free from your board then you use that to cut your self free.
I have left mine on there.
